Dexter 06x05 ‐ ‘The Angel of Death’
If I was only allowed one question in relation to this week’s episode of Dexter, it would be this: What the fuck is going on with Quinn’s face? Honestly, if I had time to go through the episode and screencap each one of his expressions, I would, because there is some seriously weird stuff going on there. And is Quinn supposed to be hot? Why is it that he can basically throw out a few smarmy lines, smile, and then have girls trying to sleep with him? Whatever, Dexter.
Anyway, this episode finally gets around to advancing the ‘Doomsday Killers’ storyline, and also manages to get Dexter involved as he tracks Travis (Colin Hanks). Okay. I’ve got a few qualms with this stuff. Now that Dexter is certain that Travis is involved in the killings, why doesn’t he tell Miami Metro? I get that Dexter’s thing is tracking killers and punishing them, but when you think about it, this is pretty god damn inconsistent. Part of Dexter’s whole moral compass is that he punishes murderers who have escaped legal punishment. That is what Dexter does. So it doesn’t make much sense to me that he would be tracking Travis behind the backs of the police, who are actively looking for the Doomsday Killers (although they haven’t caught onto Travis yet, just Gellar). For the sake of consistency, it would make more sense for Dexter to turn Travis in to the police, and then, if the courts fail to make a sentence stick, kill him. Either that, or wait for the police to find Gellar and to wrap up their investigations, then kill Travis. I understand that the writers need to find something interesting for Dexter to do, but a little character consistency would be nice, particularly as Dexter is the only decent character on this show (especially now that Brother Sam is dead? What was with that? No more Mos Def? Well okay.)
I don’t have too much else to say on this episode because I wasn’t paying a lot of attention, but here is some other stuff:
Hey, we got our wish! Looks like LaGuerta won’t be around much anymore. She didn’t even get a single appearance this week. But I think the writers just decided to give her time to Angel, which is maybe only marginally better.
On the topic of consistency, I also don’t really buy Dexter just letting Travis go, just because Travis claimed innocence. That is EXACTLY the opposite of how Dexter would normally act. Think about how his victims always plead with him in their final moments. What makes this any different?
I did like the way that car scene was shot, though. That was nicely done.
SPOILER ALERT: Gellar isn’t real! He’s in Travis’s mind! Lots of stuff to suggest this throughout this episode, not least the fact that the front page of the newspaper changes between shots (and says ‘VACATION MURDERER’? Wasn’t that last season? What are you getting at, writers?)
Oh, and good job having Angel in the top corner of that picture, above, Dexter!
