Fringe 04x05
Way to make us wait like 3 weeks for a new Fringe episode, Fox! HATE YOU! As all of us Fringe fans know (yep, all 666 of us), Peter is back! Firstly big ups to Fringe for this season in general. I’ve been waiting to write about Fringe on here for a bit and now is my time to write a little spiel about how this is maybe the most interesting show on television right now. It is so interesting, shut up jocks!
Fringe has been growing the complexity of its world ever since it started as a somewhat middling X-Files rip-off for the iPhone generation a few years ago or something. Last season it went all out in exploring its mythos and especially all out in alienating any potential new viewers; pretty much it pulled a Lost and is so much better for it. This is clearly a show that seems to have given up on acquiring a mainstream audience and decided to go for the geeks. And it works. Alternate universes and now an alternate timeline! This is some comic book style retcon (google it, jocks) shit going on and it’s really good.
Not only has this series gone batshit with it’s plot, but this season it completely removed one it’s main characters from existence. Pretty ballsy move for any series let alone one on Fox, and this episode seems to be one more step closer to re-achieving the status quo. Sure it’s been great to see what a universe without Peter would be like and alternate (original?) Lincoln Lee is the coolest, but I’m pretty sure everyone wants Peter to mack on with Olivia again and for his alternate universe baby to reappear somehow.
Fringe was doing a good job at creating a world without Peter so it’s interesting to see him back and interacting with characters who don’t know who he is. Of course being Fringe though we can’t get a whole episode that deals with the over-arching plot so in this episode there is something to do with translucent shape-shifters going on which sounds so dumb writing it out but is actually kind of good. It did seem weird how much killing the cancer survivor lady was willing to do to not die from cancer, relax lady, your life is not more important than all of those people you killed so maybe just let yourself die. Also, why can she run up walls? But cool, I guess some sort of unknown enemy is needed now that the two universes are working together. Supposedly.
Probably when you read about Fringe as a non-viewer you are like “what the fuck is this bullshit?”. I bet you are like that, but if you made it past the middling first season and have made it this far you are like “woah! This show is the best! I LOVE YOU PETER/OLIVIA!!!!”. Yep. Watch it.
